Dr. Omair Zubairi joined Florida Polytechnic University in the fall of 2023 as an assistant professor of physics in the Physics Department. Zubairi earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics from San Diego State University. He earned his Ph.D. in computational science in a joint doctor program at San Diego State University and Claremont Graduate University in the spring of 2015. His research lies in the areas of numerical astrophysics, general relativity, cosmology, and computational methods and technics. Over the past decade, Zubairi held positions both in academia and industry. His prior academic experience comes from Wentworth Institute of Technology where he served as an assistant professor of physics in the Department of Sciences from fall 2015 to fall 2019.
During his time at Wentworth, Zubairi fostered 11 distinct undergraduate physics projects with students from various majors such as applied math, mechanical engineering, computer science, and civil engineering. Zubairi was the principal investigator recipient of Wentworth’s EPIC Mini Grant program for constructing Wentworth’s first high-performance computer. The system was used for course development and research across campus for faculty, staff, and students. He was awarded the President’s Award for Distinguished Scholarship in May of 2018. In June of 2018, he was elected a standing committee member for the International Association of Relativistic Dynamics group.
Zubairi taught every physics course offered in the Department of Sciences at Wentworth. Additionally, he developed a computational physics elective. In the summer of 2015, he collaborated with faculty in computer science to teach a senior-level parallel computing course which included OpenMP and MPI in C and Fortran used on a cluster.
In September 2019, Dr. Zubairi joined MathWorks as a senior training engineer where he prepared and delivered highly technical training programs in data science, mathematical optimization, statistics, application building, code generation, and parallel and high-performance computing using MATLAB as they related to common customer applications. In addition to training, he also worked on course and curriculum development for various tracks across STEM sectors.
Zubairi served in United States Marine Corps for six years as an infantryman, stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. He was honorably discharged in 2003 with the rank of corporal. During his free time, Zubairi likes to travel, weightlift, and ride motorcycles. Additionally, he enjoys making and simulating models of anything he finds interesting.
